AdamC IJN CarDiv 5 and friends 20 Points

 Some Japanese Naval units.

First up we have six Fubuki class destroyers. When they first appeared the 1920s the Fubuki class were the new gold standard for destroyers (at least on paper) they were fast 39 knots , manoeuvrable, heavily armed with six twin turrets and nine torpedo tubes.

Like many Japanese designs they did have some structural issues as well as the stability issues Icommon to destroyers of this era. The temptation to try to cram too much performance into too small a hull is hard to resist.

Still after some modifications they proved useful ships for Japan throughout World War II.  Only two of twenty-four survived the War and one of the survivors served in the Soviet Navy until 1964.

A pair of Tako class Cruisers.  Designed in the early 1930s these are work horse cruises for the IJN.  They carried ten 8" guns in five twin turrets. Japanese Naval designers liked have numerous turrets as they wanted their ships to be able to engage multiple targets (they never actually did this as far as I can tell) as they expected to be outnumbered.

Theses ships also carried a powerful torpedo armament. They did have some stability issues that had to be corrected in the late 30s. They were heavier than permitted by treaty but Japan was trying to honor the spirit while building a balanced design.  They were intended to be able to crush any nominal equal and deliver a painful punch to larger targets.

Here we have our headliners the carrier division 5 Shokaku (Soaring Crane) and Zuikaku (Auspicious or maybe "lucky" Crane)  the most modern and in the opinion of many best carries the IJN built. Hope you like my attempt at hand painting their decks

Finished just before the start of the war these ships and their air crews were derided as the "son's of concubines" by the more experienced ships and aircrew of Carrie Divisions 1 and 2.

They were less experienced and that showed in the battle of Coral Sea. They arguably won that clash but got badly mauled in the process and missed Midway. They carried on through the rest of the war without their 'elder brothers'  Shokaku was sunk by a submarine at the battle of the Philippine Sea and Zuikaku was sunk in the battle of Layte Gulf.

We have 10 ships of the 1/2400 which is should give me 20 points.

  2. Adam, another great set of ships are hitting the high seas. I haven't played much Naval action games, but with all these great looking ships I've seen, I might have to make some time to give it a go. Nice work.
