From:BruceR, 28mm AWI Front Rank Scotts and support (70 points)

Welcome to another Wednesday submission.  No planets, no travel, just a few miniatures as life, work, guests challenged the Challenge.

Last week was Sauerkraut in the form of Hessian Grenadiers and this week some stalwart haggis lovers.  Once again expanding my AWI forces and more for the King in our Sharp Practice 2 saga.  I only had the 8 Front Rank Scotts in the lead pile and after finishing them have had to stop the itch to click and order more.  I'm sure it will happen at some point.  These eight are from Front Rank and again I love painting the bulkier figures as it makes for ease of painting and characterful faces.  I elected to go with campaign gear, without the kilt, as I went down the kilt road last year.  So here are a few more of the Kings own.

To support the King's men a little early artillery piece.  Again, Front Rank and I painted the only crew in coat in British colors as my friends are working on continental guns and the King needs his support.  The other three are in their work gear to service the gun.  The figures are great with the wheel barrel and the crewman opening the powder cask adding flavor to the figures.

On deck are some Norman archers for SAGA and some British FIW.  Gotta keep, keepin on.

That rounds out the week.  Hope everybody has had a productive and happy week.  Stay safe.

Hi Bruce - very nice work. I have to agree, there is something quite satisfying about the Front Rank castings, they are a real treat to paint and look just lovely once finished. It will be interesting to see what Gripping Beast does with all of those lovely castings now that their purchase seems to have been completed - allowing you to indulge your perfectly reasonable instincts to order just a few more figures.

From RobH - 3rd Post - Double Feature, Fantasy (40 Points)

My annual contribution for my LOTR collection. I present Shadowfax with some wizard hanging onto his mane.

Early in January I purchased a Briton/Romano-British Warband locally. It came with the following Character figures (Merlin, Guinevere, Bishop, Arthur, Nimue).

The seller wrote that the warband consisted mostly of Footsore and Gripping Beast miniatures. I have not been able to identify the figure on their websites.

I think this is Guinevere in disguise. Guinevere stands waiting within some ruins.

The ruins were a plastic bombed out building by Italeri Plastic Models. I filled in the wall with putty and texture paint for the interior, and added the secondary stone wall, all on a 60mm x 80mm base. (3.1" L  x 2.3" W x 2.3" H = 16.4 cubic inches)

Guinevere will allow Shadowfax a trip upon Lady Sarah's Star Yacht to the planet Arda: Fantasy; Tolkienesque

Scoring -  38 Points

1 - 28mm mounted figure @ 10 points = 10 Points

1 - 28mm Figures @ 5 points each = 5 Points

1 - Terrain Piece @ 3 Points (I figure it is worth a 1/6 of a cube)

1 way ticket aboard Lady Sarah's Star Yacht to Arda @ 20 points

Nice work on your double feature here Rob. I love that Gandalf Shadowfax figured - I actually need to track one of those down for my own collection! In terms of scoring, when I work up the spreadsheet magic, it actually comes up to 40 points - so a couple of extra bonus for you :)

From RobH - 2nd Post - Double Feature, Science Fiction (65 Points)

I have a quick follow-up with some more Pulp Figures by Bob Murch. The first is Dr. Promethius & his Death Ray (PWM -13) as part of his Weird Menace line.

Next are a group of figures I have dubbed, the Yellow Venom Society, who will be making an appearance in a Daredevils RPG (FGU) game I am running.

They are listed as Evil Hooded Minions 1 (PWM-4) and Evil Hooded Minions 2 (PWM-5). As Bob writes in his catalogue, "Nefarious members of a criminal cult, the hooded minion was a staple of Pulp Era fiction." So are mad scientists with their death rays.

As the leader of this nefarious I have chosen the Crimson Scorpion from Weird Villains 1 (PWM - 1). I however was inspired by Lord Byron and The Destruction of Sennacherib and painted him, gleaming in purple and gold.

Scoring - 65 Points

11 - 28mm Figures @ 5 points each = 55 Points

1 - 28mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon @ 10 points = 10 Points

Well done Rob. Looking out at the Park across the street this morning, things seem nice and clear. But that said, a Death Ray might be a useful way to keep things quiet around here. At least the Yellow Venom Society have the decency to pay for the proper permits and clean up after their events.

From RayR - Lune/Sorcery Cooking Man and Haitian Priests (40 points)

Finally made it to The Inner Ring, and my first Planet to visit via Arakkis is Lune, I'll be using the Tag Witchcraft/Sorcery.

I first saw the 3 figures in this post on Stuart's blog Dust, Tears & Dice and thought I'll have to get them one day. When I saw the list of planets in the Challenge I ordered them straight away.

I already had the Cooking Man figure from Infinity Engine. Sold as Campfire with Human BBQ! Yum!
I picked that up at a show a few years ago, thinking I might need it one day for the Challenge, and that day has come!

The three North Star figures are from the Dracula's America range
The Mambo, the Bokor,  and the Houngan

A manbo (also written as mambo) is a priestess (as opposed to a oungan, a male priest) in the Haitain Vodoo religion.

A bokor (male) or caplata (female) is a Vodoo witch for hire who is said to serve the loa "with both hands", practicing for both good and evil. Their black magic includes the creation of zombies and of 'ouangas', talismans that house spirits.

Oungan (also written as houngan) is the term for a male priest in Haitian Vodou (a female priest is known as a manbo).

Rear view:

I think this could possibly be a former Plantation Owner, who was rather disliked by his subjects?

The only problem with the figures is they're tiny, as you can see in the photo. I've added a Trent mini
for scale. The North Star figures have already been double based to give them a little more height.
I'm sure they'll mix in well though, the Rejects won't even notice the size difference.
Rebel/Slave leaders are pretty hard to come by so these will fit in well and become commanders for the Rebel/Slave army.

Points
3 x 25mm figures @ 5 pts= 15pts
Not sure how many points for the Cooking man?  I'll leave that to you Greg.
20 pts for the Lune bonus

What better way to shake off the morning doldrums than some magic and some breakfast? I'm know all of us make impulse figure purchases, although combining the fairly common thought of "I might need that for The Challenge" with the purchase of a human being cooked...well, count on Ray to deliver :)

Fine work on these Ray, continuing to add character and interest to your Haitian Revolution project. I'll score the overall, let's call it "cooking base", as a 25mm figure, so five points for that and 40 points overall. Well done Ray.

Now I'm hungry, and I need to find some breakfast.

From JamieM - A whistle stop tour of the middle ring (136 points)

I had to leave this post until today’s minion had imbibed his first coffee (or other suitable morning beverage) of the day, as I didn’t want to chance him spitting it out as he read the "Supermarket Sweep" style bonus points gathering about to occur in this post…… let’s go wild in the aisles!

Anyway, first up - Coruscant. I’ve gone with “Good vs. Evil” here, with some more carnevale figures

Here we see the Good Capo of the Guild (in the red) facing off against the evil Rashaar worshippers. The Rashaar are an evil race of fish people who want to take over Venice and some silly humans worship them. Here we have two such people and a lesser hybrid, although the less guessed about how hybrids come about, the better…..

The Capo is a leader in the Guild and this is an alternate female sculpt that ttcombat do which is brilliantly dynamic.

Next up, a trip to Perelandra and an Oceanic theme. This is a Barchyura also for Carnevale, which is a large crab beastie who wants to nip your toes as you go paddling in rock pools.

Ttcombat don’t do a figure for this yet, so this is an OOP figure from the Wrath of Kings range which I rather like, so I’m pleased to have found him a home.

For some reason, he has a belt of bags around his waist…. Perhaps his fellow Rashaar worry about thieves in Venice? In fairness, you wouldn’t want to pickpocket this fella….

After our stop at Perelendara, it’s off on Sarah’s Space Yacht we go for the first time and this is my offering for such purpose - a female Magi Rashaar

She’s a leader character for the Rashaar and is again an alternate sculpt with bags of dynamism.

She’s a mage, so is using the water to carry her as she delves into her magical bag of tricks. I tried to make the staff feel like coral, not sure how successful I was.

Anyway, we’ll be dropped off at LV426 I’m order to show these aliens off

These two are from Mantic games and will be used for Deadzone, a sci-fi skirmish game fought on a gridded table which looks ace but that I haven’t been able to try yet. These are a Judwan medic and a large fella (converted from a Dreadball figure) who will be an “Alpha Simian” in the game. His job is to run up and punch people with extreme prejudice.

I tried to make his armour look battered and chipped, but as ever I’ve been too heavy handed so the black parts look like metal….. but that’s ok as long as he duffs up plenty of his enemies.

So, to the scoring! As a recap, here they all are

There are:

5x 28mm figures = 25

3x 40mm figures = 21

One planetary visit through the warp maelstrom = 30 points?

Two further planets at 20 points each = 40

One space yacht visit = 20 points

For a grand total of 136 by my count. And I’m positively dripping in bonus points!

Well, Paul Ray Jamie, this is some fine painting here. "Carnevale" looks to be a very entertaining setting, and it must be a great feeling to get more characters - even if they ARE fish-worshippers - ready for a game. Barchyura - does he do canal rides? I assume the packs are for all of the tips he collects?

Very nice sci-fi figures. I enjoy any large sci-fi creature who has the job of running up and punching enemies with extreme prejudice. Awesome.

You certainly managed a fair bit of bonus points leverage on this one. Not quite Enron levels, mind you, but I was half expecting to see a blacksmith here for LV246 while you claimed "all of the space technology is alien to him"...nonetheless, it's all within the rules, and as inflation eats our economy alive, why not let our own version of modern monetary theory run wild in the Challenge scoring as well?

Fine brush work here Jamie! 136 points for you...

From SylvainR - 6mm Infrastructures (120 points)

I was first introduced to wargaming in 6mm scale and it has been love at first sight. I love the feeling of playing a massive army at this scale.

But before you can play a decent game, you need scenery.  I mentioned in previous posts that I bought lots of 6mm stuff from a friend a few years ago, stuff that he amassed over many years, resulting in a very eclectic collection.  In the first part of this post, I will present some "real estate". According to the rules, I would say that if everything was piled up, all the buildings and enclosures would probably fit in two 6x6x6"cubes, for a total of 40 points.

First, a metal building from CinC and an obelisk. CinC buildings are so fragile. I mounted this one on a cardboard base to reinforce its structural integrity.

Next, we have a group of ruined buildings from LEVA. I remember fondly Alain Lévesque, the founder of LEVA, who started his business in Montréal back in the 1980s. In those days without 3D printers,  we would bring him models to "copy". We would make a mold and do resin copies for us and help us save money. I still have some of these bootleg copies. Anyway, I find his the LEVA line of buildings very elegant. Here is a link to a village with LEVA products I painted 12 years ago.

This big tractor factory, another item from LEVA's line of destroyed buildings, will provide a nice centerpiece for urban battles.

Here we have a stone bridge and a pontoon bridge. Both are from CinC. These land features will be used for river crossing scenarios, once I have enough units for two armies.

In the lot, I found some walls and fences from GHQ. Instead of letting them stand free, I opted to glue them on cardboard and create small enclosures, so they could be used either a pasture, a yard for a mansion, a parking lot, a court, etc.

Here is an example of how these enclosures can be used with a building in the middle.

In the second part of this post, I will show you models for which the labels "train" and "railway" were created for the first time ever in the history of the Challenge. For the rails, I would say that they fill about one cube if piled up, for 20 points. It's hard to tell, because the rails are all flat. For the cars and engine, I think the easiest is to count them as separate vehicles, so 30x 6mm vehicles at 2 points each for a total of 60 points. Note that the rails come from 3 different manufacturers and I had to mount them on an elevated base to create some sort of homogeneity. Still, if you look closely, you can distinguish three different gauges in the box.

These six freight cars are from LEVA. It was too difficult to glue the cars on the rails, so I created additional rail elevations to put them on. It also gave me additional lengths of railroad.

Fuel cars and flat cars from LEVA. Note the special flat car for super heavy tanks. The Brumbars and the Jadgpanther are just used for embellishment and were painted by a friend of mine, AndréD, many years ago.

These four cars are from Irregular Miniatures and provide a nice little convoy to be used with the green locomotive (see below).

Eight cars from Heroics&Ros to create an armoured train. The design is clearly German, but I decided not to put any markings, so I could use this set as Polish or Soviet armoured trains as well.

And, finally, the engines, the queens of the rail. The leftmost one is from LEVA. I could not tell you which real engine is is based on. But when I surfed the net to find color schemes, I found that in Germany wheels were painted red instead of black to facilitate spotting cracks in the wheels. The green locomotive is from Irregular Miniatures, and if you feel an urge to say "Thomas the Engine", well, you are wrong. Thomas is blue. His friend James is the green one :-). And then we  have an armoured locomotive for the armoured train, from Heroics&Ros. I counted each engine as two vehicles because of the tenders.

The final picture show three train convoys side by side. I'm sure the addition of railways and trains will create interesting focal points for future WW2 battles in Europe.

To summarize, it is suggested that the buildings are worth 40 points, the rails 20 points and the train cars 60 points for a total of 120 points.

As always, thanks for reading!

Very nice work Sylvain. I have a bit of experience with LEVA products, and you are correct, they really are excellent for 6mm. And well done cranking out all of the railways - rail lines make for excellent terrain bits, particularly in smaller scale gaming where a rail line can play an important role in battlefield planning - and the embankments are great for defending!
