From MarkO - Send in the Landwehr! (726 points)

Ok, 144 Austrian Napoleonic Landwehr. Two main thoughts sprung to mind while painting these: "Wow these are much easier than painting other Napoleonics" (all the black webbing), and also "Wow Napoleonics are still a pain to paint compared to practically anything else I could have chosen!". But I love them, so... here we are...

I wanted troops that wouldn't look too out of place in later campaigns, hence the grey jackets with coloured facings. The uniform is still rather drab compared to many Napoleonic uniforms though, so here's a nice stirring piece to improve the morale of these militia.

And... forward!

Close ups of one regiment.

From Curt:

Well, this is a points nuke if I ever saw one! Fantastic stuff Mark, I particularly like the battalion with the pink facings, very smart looking. Are these Perry plastics? Also, (and I can't remember if I've asked this already) what rules system are you using for these? I'm really looking forward to when we near the end of the Challenge so we can get some 'work entire' photos of people's work. Your 3-months worth of labour will be very impressive Mark!

  4. I'll echo Curt - that isn't a points bomb, it's a points nuke. All we mere mortals can do is bow down before you.

It isn't just the quantity, it's the quality. Fabulous work Mark :)

    1. I think its the painting equivalent of the Death Star's planet killing laser.

    2. Ha you are all too kind! (I think, given the comparison to the nukes and Death Stars... :))

  6. That is seriously impressive Mark. I hope you're more than satisfied by what you've produced because you certainly should be. Quantity aside, the detail and crispness on every single miniature is superb. That you reproduced it 144 times over is amazing.

PS. Even with that many, half a dozen Frenchies would still see them off two times out of three. :-)

PPS. I want to know what you listed too tunes-wise. I've been getting through a pile of albums of late and you must have racked up a good few as well.

    1. As usual, I'll step in uninvited to blather. I often listen to audiobooks when I'm painting. I love the ability to both paint and 'read' at the same time. I just finished Neal Stephanson's 'Cryptonomicon' which weighed in at around 43 hours (a 800+ page book). It was a bit of a slog but quite good. Next is Cornwell's '1356'. This all being said I've been enjoying Chrissie Hynde's latest 'Stockholm'. Curt, out.

    2. Cheers Millsy, got to keep you on you on your toes and motivated! And yes lots of listening... audio versions of War and Peace, Clausewitz On War, heaps of the Hardcore History collection from Dan Carlin, Napoleon podcast, various you tube docos, just to name some of the war stuff. Picketty Capital in 21st century, a book on how AI will doom us all, a movie about Chimpanzees, lots of music of diverse periods, lectures relevant to my work as a clinical psychologist... That's some of what I remember!! :)

And yes Curt yes these are the Perry plastics. Rules are anything that can use this format of basing, so Lasalle, Blackpowder, maybe even GdB (will need to combine a few units), and Blucher which has just come out today and which I might purchase very shortly...

  12. Now I know what it's like to be Nuke'd from orbit.

I'm squatting now at the painting desk in my fall out shelter trying to figure out a way to justify that the eerie irradiated glow my future challenge submissions will have is "realistic" Where did I put that pot of Vault-Tec Cesium Yellow paint?

Seriously, a wonderful entry in both quality and magnitude

  13. Well that could definately be called a points bomb! I'm pretty sure you have taken the win for the largest single entry :) Still great work on them! I can imagine black webbing speeds things up! (Or actually anything other than that darn white...)

  21. I don't even know what to say. That's nearly my entire points goal in one entry... O__o

Honestly, the thing that keeps me away from Napoleonics is not so much the intricate uniforms but the sheer VOLUME. My hat is off to folks like you who can manage it.
