From Curt: 40K Inquisitorial Retinue - Part I (10 Points)

Hello All and Merry Christmas!!

We've had a huge meal and have just returned from taking the dogs out for a big romp in the snow. Now with everyone taking a nap I thought I could sneak away to post up my second entry so I can close the gap with Juan.

I'm a big fan of Dan Abnett's writing, especially his 'Inquisitor' series of books. This past autumn I ran a 'Dark Heresy' RPG campaign for a few friends. In my story, the player characters begin as new recruits for an Inquisitor they have never met. Her name is Esme Rochel-Perez. They are facilitated through her large retinue of arcane and dangerous specialists, who brief the players to the task at hand and provide them with a modicum of support (but not so much to make them feel at ease).

Here are two members of Esme's retinue, Second Interrogator Roland Velasquez and Arch Adherer Barthalamaus Pinder.

These are both older 28mm Games Workshop figures. I'm not sure if they are still available (I can never keep track of the comings and goings of their catalogue) but they are beautiful castings with loads of character and wonderful details to tease out with a brush.

Arch Adherer Barthalamaus Pinder

Not much to say here. I've used fairly subdued colours for these two, with lots of browns, blacks and greens. The brazier's coals and Pinder's banner were fun to work on as was Velasquez's bionic arm and plasma pistol.

Second Inquisitor Roland Velasquez

Over the rest of the Challenge I will be introducing other members of Inquisitor Rochel-Prez's retinue, all the while (hopefully) keeping Juan on his toes with his 'Rogue Stars' efforts. Wish me luck!

    1. Thanks Ken, much appreciated but it wouldn't be cricket to award myself any extra points. I'm more than happy with my 10. :)

  3. This can only be the work of the infamous heretic and chaoticist Curt Campbell!

Ramping up the grimdark for the Inquisitorial duel, I see! Noice!

  4. That's some fantastic brushwork. They look fantastic. The dogs look like they had a blast too.

    1. Thanks! Oscar and Felix LOVE the snow so it's always a blast taking them out for a romp.

  5. Nobody expects the Imperial Inquisition! Seriously, I had no idea these models existed. They look fabulous! Great work!

    1. Thanks Mang! Now I wish I had an extra one of those scribes I gave you last year. He would be a cool addition to the retinue. Ebay here I come! ;)

    1. Thanks for saying but I ALWAYS struggle with colour blending and I'm afraid I'm kinda rubish at it. One must always try and try again...

  8. Top brushwork Curt, even if I've no idea what they are!!

  9. Wonderful painting work, Curt. The colours you have chosen are perfect for these figures. I am searching Ebay looking for them, since a time ago, because these figures are now rare, and some of the best, in my opinion.
Great entry to your Retinue, my friend.

    1. I've had them for ages so have no idea is they are rare or not. Now I'm glad I held on to them. I have a few more rattling around here to work on...

  10. Lovely work on some very nice figures, I'm raiding my stalled retinue to reuse figures for frostgrave, the inquisition has the best background in the 40K universe I reckon very well done.
    Best Iain

    1. I agree the best 'fluff' for 40K is the Inquisition. It seems to do a much better job at describing the remorseless dystopia of that universe.

  11. Happy looking Dogs

Your painting really is some of the best I've ever seen, by the way

  12. That's some absolutely gorgeous painting Curt! Love all the different browns you used.

    1. Yeah, it was a bit of 'a study in brown' for these two. Might try to carry the motif further with the other chaps and chapesses.

  13. As a old GW sometime fanboy...the shotgun toting Mr Pinder is the priest and special character who is still available. The inquisitor model is a special release for conventions and was only produced for a year, he is very expensive, like two boxes of terminators expensive!
I'd say this one is worth at least 3 boxes of termies now that the snow lord has painted him! He and the priest look fantastic, Curt!
The colors work really well on them and I really like Uriah's er Pinder's banner!
It looks like it needs a cleaning as desperately as Pinder! ;)

    1. Thanks for sourcing the provenance on these figures David. Yikes, I had no idea that Roland was so rare. Come to think of it I picked him up, along with his Fantasy witchfinder counterpart, at a Games Day in Toronto years ago.

    2. Indeed, he was a slight,y converted version of an inquisitor pointing a power sword and carrying an inferno pistol, which is a fantastic looking gun. Excellent work on picking one up!

  14. Lovely work! Looking forward to seeing more 40K characters. Didn't know you were also a RPG player you geek! Never tried Dark Heresy, we're playing WHFRP at the moment ;-)

    1. Yup! Total geekasaurus. :) LOVE WHFRP in all its incarnations. Sooo brutal.

  15. These are brilliant. You've really pulled off the dark and limited pallet, which I find much harder than it should be. Very nice.

  16. I'm like Ray (god I need help), I dunno WTF they are but they are very well done. Great muted palette.

  17. Inquisitor is the only Specialist Game I never got into for some reason. Every time I see stuff like this it makes me wish I had. Wonderful brushwork mate.

    1. Oh I've not played 'Inquisitor' either - these are for 'Dark Heresy' a RPG created by Fantasy Flight Games (licensed by GW, though that has recently changed).

  18. Yes! These truly hit the mark. Never played the game, however, that said does not mean I can't appreciate fine brushwork when I see it.

    Cheers, Ross

  20. These are absolutely brilliant. The paint job is fantastic and love the face on the preacher as you've got the expression dead right - with I could paint faces that well. I've also played Dark heresy and more than one version of WHFRP.

    1. Ooh, a veteran WH role-player! Yes, I really enjoyed the various versions of WHFRP - all wonderfully brutal in their own way. I just finished a Dark Heresy campaign and quite enjoyed running it.

  21. Lovely brushwork as always Curt but they don't look very Spanish to me - oh, wrong Inquisition; my mistake! :)

  22. Great to see the dogs so happy! Those are both fine figures, elegantly painted. I have to wonder at the wisdom of holding a brazier of hot coals at the top of a tall stick while firing a shotgun one handed, but I would never ever utter such heresy aloud, for fear of the Inquisitor's minions.

    1. I believe like today, in the 'Grim, Dark Future' there is not enough wisdom to go around. :)

    1. Thanks Alex but I kept it simple and scored them as two 28mm figures. I can't be cooking the books. We'll leave that to professionals, like the President Elect... ;)

  24. Oh thids takes me down memorylane: I had these too once but sold them. Very nice work and it's only part 1!

  25. Beautiful paintwork on very characterful figures!

  26. Fine work, Sir! I can almost touch the grime, hear the clanking of chains, and smell the sulphur clouds belching from the brazier. I love the colour scheme - which you can just imagine of the latest fashions for inquisitors in the Spinward Marches, or wherever. A really great entry, which should have me reaching for my Ravener Omnibus!
