A "small" submission today of "big fings wiff teef". This is two units of ogres for my Oathmark fantasy armies, deliberately painted in neutral colours to allow me to use them in multiple factions as required. The limited palette was a bit of a challenge to keep something so large interesting but I'm happy enough with the outcome.
Four of the minis are dodgy "orcs" from a Russian company bought via the interwebs a few years back. Apparently the scale is 1/32 but they'll certainly do for 28mm scale ogres. At 4 for $10 including postage you can't argue with the price and they do have plenty of character, but there are obvious flaws both in the soft detail and some weird infills that would have been cut out in better sculpts.
The remaining two minis are Reaper Bones plastics and also on the cheap side for something this big. One has a head swap with a Games Workshop ogre as I wasn't fussed with the supplied head. Despite being "better" than the others I enjoyed painting them less. They take primer badly even after a good wash and scrub and the detail is still soft in many places. Ultimately they do the job though.
Grrrr!!!!! Bitey shield! |
Points-wise I'm not sure what there are worth. They stand around 60mm tall to the eye and took about the same time to paint as 4-5 x 28mm minis if that's any guide. I throw myself on the mercy of the score gods in this instance...
Hope you like em!
Cheers,
Millsy

I must admit to an instinctive sucking of teeth when I read of your bold choice to use Reaper bendy plastic models, but both units look great! Its hard to make a plain paint scheme work but you've done it well and I'd prefer not to meet these chaps on a battlefield...or dark alley for that matter. Perhaps they moonlight as the heavies for Liverpool F.C.!
Nicely done- given their height and heft I'll score them as 54mm figs plus a couple extra per fig, so thats 72 points in the bag!
Top brushwork Millsy!
ReplyDeleteVery cool minis! I really love that skin tone.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done, those Russian models have always been atteatvly cheap and you’ve done a smashing job mixing them I
ReplyDeleteBig ugly and vicious, what's not to love. The source material may be dodgy, but the end result isn't. Good work soldiering on through soft bending plastic.
ReplyDeleteI really like the skin color Millsy! The teeth and armor, plus the basing are top notch here. I've done some bones mini giants for frostgrave and for the price they are great, IMHO. Well done.
ReplyDeleteGreat work Millsy, I think the limited colour palette works very well!
ReplyDeleteThey may have started out cheap and dodgy miniatures but they look fantastic now. I hated thevoriginal bones material in the KS so much I gave the lot away.
ReplyDeleteLove 'em Millsy. I especially like the tan skin tone and the dark metal armour. A nasty (and characterful) trio, to be sure.
ReplyDeleteWow, these are fantastic Millsy!
ReplyDeleteA great paintjob like this really makes up for any casting issues!
ReplyDeleteThese are great, if bendy.
ReplyDeleteNice orky things
ReplyDeleteGood to see those Millsy after hearing you talk about them. Very well done
ReplyDeleteWow - gorgeous. You're a better man than I Gunga Din painting bendy figs!
ReplyDeleteLovely work here Millsy. You are right about Reaper models, they can be so tempting with the price and the range, but then persuading them to take paint, sheesh it's a struggle.
