From RayR - Sarah's Star Yacht & Arda (75 points)

  

For only my second post in this the 12th Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, I'm taking a trip on Sarah's Star Yacht from my massively successful Pointy Ears at Vulcan!!! to the pleasant surroundings of Arda.

 

For payment for this trip I'd like to introduce you to Becky Burton the buxom18th Century barmaid.

Becky is from the wonderful chaps at Col Bill's and can be found here, for £3.25

Upon arrival at planet Arda, I chose the Tolkienesque route after I found these sitting in my unloved box. They are obviously from Games Workshop and represent 6 Warriors of Minas Tirith.

 

I do have a few more of these as well as some other bits and bobs that may pop up a little later, IF I can't work out what else to paint for this years bonus rounds.

All Challengers should feel free to review it once more...perhaps the in-flight entertainment on Sarah's Star Yacht will allow you to take a quick look at it.

From PaulSS - 69th New York, the Fighting 69th (Klendathu)(The Great Abyssal)- 112 points

 

This weeks progress sees my first Union forces of Challenge XII with a regiment of New York Irish moving to the fore.

All the figures are from the Fighting 69th. set from Crusader Miniatures and are lovely casts, although a bit thinner than the Perry Miniatures so look a bit more sparse on their bases, maybe I should have mounted these in fours rather than threes.

The standards are from Flags of War and are included in the set, having looked at the photos, the green seems a little fogged by the varnish, so I'll likely give that another coat of brush-on to sort it out.

The "Sons of Erin" are depicted in action at the Battle of Antietam in the great picture by Don Troiani, this depicts several of the troops bare footed and the set from Crusader includes a few men without shoes.

Why Klendathu? The Battle of Antietam was the first major battle in the eastern theatre that took place on Union soil, the battle was indecisive and led to Confederates retreating back into their own territory.

As I have now completed four planets in the Outer Ring, I'd like to throw myself into the The Great Abyssal and progress to the Middle Ring.

Eighteen 28mm foot figures with two standards and the location bonus should add 112 points to the board for me.

Hi Paul - fine work on these US Civil War figures. The right sort of blue for Federal troops can be tricky, but you have nailed it here. Had no idea about the troops-without-shoes aspect of this unit, but that is one of the fine things about this Painting Challenge, the little nuggets of interesting info you pick up along the way. 

I would say connecting the Antietam Campaign to the spirit behind Klendathu is a touch tenuous, but the bridge will manage to hold in this instance - spared perhaps by those soldiers who are lighter as they are unencumbered by shoes...

From RobH - First Post - Double Feature, Science Fiction (75 Points)

Do you remember the Republic Picture serials such as Zombies of the Stratosphere? 

 

Before cable TV they were a staple of  the local 5:30 children's TV show in the mid 1960s on CTV in Halifax. Those images have been brought to life by the Pulp Figures creations of  Robert Murch.

My first submission to this season's edition of the challenge is a homage to those childhood memories. Late last year I placed an order from both his Weird Menace and Mystery and Horror lines. I hope to get them all painted this challenge.

 

 

First up is a female Martian crew member (I cannot find a film credit) in charge of a phalanx of Robots (I don't remember what film these are from, if any).  I do find them somewhat reminiscent of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

Better late then never, I included the street Santa that was a bonus figure from Bob, for orders placed in December. I didn't get it painted in time to go with the Christmas tableau in my living room.

From SidneyR: Mousquetaires du Roi for Glorantha (Outer Ring) [65 points)

It’s taken me a while to arrive, but this is my first post in Challenge XII. After a December which was busy with family things, my painting plans have been delayed considerably by a dose of the Covid lurgy. But, at long last, here’s my first post.

I’ve chosen to land on Glorantha, the planet of heroes. And this submission is all about the heroes of the King’s Musketeers, the Mousquetaires du Roi - heroes of the books and films set in the world of Alexandre Dumas.

I’ve been working with a couple of friends during the second part of 2021 on a set of rules set in the historical Paris of 1622, which is inspired by Dumas’ novels.  And these figures from Brigade Games and Wargames Foundry, in 28mm, are perfect for many different games and sets of rules with that background.

The figures in the photos are not actually musketeers.  (The actual musketeers were almost all painted during the course of last Autumn).  So this selection of the Mousquetaires du Roi are very much the support players for the 'leading characters'. They're the ruffians, henchmen, veterans and sell-swords who, in our games, in the novels and sometimes in history, cluster around the nobles and gentlemen who fill the dramas which we are all so familiar with.

I converted a couple of figures with some extra green stuff, in particular for one of the prone figures to which I added a greenstuff bandolier of powder flasks and some additional flowing hair. The figures were painted with Vallejo Model Colours, and based on Warbases MDF bases.

I kept the bases very plain, as we we have been using our figures both in urban settings and also in rural environments.  I felt that having tufts of gorse and marsh-grass on the base might not look ideal for cadet musketeers guarding the Porte de Nelles in Paris.  And ruffians with broken bottles or disinterested city cats sleeping at their boots might not look ideal in the countryside of Champagne.

As for the points:

10 figures (2 prone) equates to 9 figures (half-points for prone figure), in 28mm.  So ...

9 x 28mm at @5 points = 45 points

Plus 20 points for "Glorantha" on the Outer Rim

Total = 65 points

A modest total, but every Challenge starts with a first step!

From TashaH: Mana Faerie [Vulcan] 30 points

 

Ahhh the planet of Vulcan and all things logical and pointy-eared. Not to be confused with the town of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada - where all the streets were originally named after gods and goddesses. 

I'll confess. I'm not overly happy with my figure for this planet. She is a 3D print from Jukka Seppänen on My Mini Factory If you are considering printing this file for yourself, be wary. She is fragile. The petals of her skirt and her wings are paper thin. You have been warned! (she is sooo pretty and hard to resist)

Because of her fragile nature, I was leery of going in too much to fix the errors I made.  She will look pretty on a shelf from a distance! 

 

You can see her pointy ears peeking out from behind her beautiful blue hair, which was obtained with Talassar Blue Contrast. Her dress was accomplished by using a metallic white and metallic green wash over Shyish Purple Contrast. You can't see them, but she has cute little bloomers under her dress! 

 

I based her on an mdf flower and then glued a mirrored tile of the same shape on top. I thought it mimicked the flowers on her dress and crown nicely. I then affixed the figure to the mirror. 

This shot is with the figure held up to the light, to give you an idea how thin her wings are. They definitely mimic faerie wings and the pictures don't do justice to the shimmery effect I was able to obtain on them with a very thin metallic green wash. 

I was able to get some more painting supplies this past week. I am having so much fun with all my new things!

So I've arrived at the Death Star, need to keep out of the way the creepy guy with the sore throat, looks like a jobsworth.

I've bought some things of questionable design with me,

I picked up these Atlanteans on the way. They are a bit Flash Gordon but thier steam powered crabs are tooled up with machine guns and a cannon

The crabs are from Empress (I think) and the 2 Altanteans are from a location unknown

These 2 Honourable Lead Boiler Suit company Velociraptors are not a questionable design and will give a wild pack of dinosaurs to support the lizardmen

This is definitely of questionable design. It is a Were-armadillo. Which blithering idiot designed a Were-armadillo

He's a big chap as well, standing 40mm at the crouch.

So scores are

2x28mm inf = 10

3x little machines, probably 5 each = 15

2 x small dinosaurs, probable 5 each again = 10

total = 72

It's That Man Again! A were-armadillo? Whatever next! Super work, but the location bonuses are only 20 points, so that's 62 points total!

ChrisW - Nanarchists, Fenians, Martians, British oh my (383 points)

First off, I feel I may have not introduced myself all that well, so here it goes, again.

I am retired & live in Ottawa, Canada. I have a limited internet presence under the name Menelduir. I started miniature gaming sometime around 1972 when my parents brought home a book from England by Terence Wise, titled  'Introduction to Battle Gaming'.  If my parents only realized what they were doing when they gave me that book...

I should be much better at this given the almost 50 years in this hobby, but I am not, nor has retirement  significantly increased my hobby output or quality.  Yes I have a fair amount of free time (I am married & wish to stay that way so not all my time can go into my hobby) but l have always relied on games to drive production and current events have put a crimp in my gaming, no games, no production.  Now thanks to this challenge and my embracing of the Tuesday deadline I have been able to add some much needed pressure and stress to encourage me to get stuff done.

I have fed my eclectic taste in miniatures gaming by priming any metal/resin miniatures shortly after I buy them. This means that I can readily feed my random desires without the bother of prep time.

 Now onto today's post.

So picking up from where we left off last week, we manage to leave Skaros by way of  Sarah's yacht courtesy of two peaceful nannies enjoying a game of catch? Some may call them nanarchists, but at least the kids are entertained! (miniatures from Eureka)

 

They seemed to enjoy the company of a number of high flying Fenians. We all met up on planet Caprica, delightful place full of surprises and domes, er sorry did you say full of doom, not domes, doom, oh that not going to be good at all. ('Fenian' jump troops from Brigade games)

While enjoying the climate of Caprica they were surprised  by a visit from some nice Ether Marines, accompanied by their Martian allies. ('Ether marines' are Eureka & appear to be OOP)

Now the thing is, I seem to have gone rather green this week. The end result is that the Martians could easily be viewed as being allied with the Fenians, a sudden shift like that would see the British outnumbered and themselves ambushed. It will be handy to have that flexibility from this unit.
