Paul O'G Ascends the Snowlord's Peak! (475 Points!)

Followed by his goatlike sherpas, a sweating Paul reaches the plateau and calls out in a loud and mildly intoxicated voice:

"OI! Hear me oh Mighty Snowlord! I approach your mighty kingdom bearing gifts to honour your Majesty"

A mighty voice bellows back from the distance

"Oh Yeah? Go on..."

Paul empties the last dregs from his ale horn before continuing:

"Yes oh Mighty One, thrice you challenged me and thrice I answer the call!

First - your challenge to build a unit for my Mortal Gods collection. May I present a Musician with taste far gentler than my own - with his double barrelled Aulos he can inspire those who fight in your name!

Presenting a Musician who as a seperate unit in Mortal Gods provides buffing bonuses to Phalanx and Light troops alike. More importantly, last year Reilly and I had an amazing tour of ancient Greece together - we had daily competitions to be the first one to find an "Aulos dude" amongst the various friezes and artwork. So this guy is fun for me because of those memories.

A voice from atop the mountain yells down:
"Well thats OK I guess, but not very inspiring and not a skull to be seen - what else have you got?"

Paul opens the next bag:
"Next I bring as thee Commanded - heavily armed beastmen - they do smell a bit gamey mind, but they will fight fiercely for you my Lord!"

Presenting an elite unit of Bestigors - heavily armoured and wielding powerful double-handed weapons.  They promise to chop their opponents to bits before lashing the bloody remnants to the herdstone.  10 Warriors and a Champion to lead them.

The Snowlord declares: "Thats more like it! And a few skulls too I see - how many?"

Paul: "A mere 20 my Lord, but there is more"

Snowlord: "More? This is indeed a bountiful offering - bring forward the last"

Paul: "I have saved the best til last your magnificence. I have slaved hard at the painting bench with these, crafting them to the best of my ability. May I present:

Kharn and the Kharnivores!

This is my new World Eaters Kill Team - long range firepower is not their speciality!

I did a lot of conversions on these boys, to give me all sorts of weapon options - from double chainswords, double chain axes, combos of both and lighting claws

And to lead them the anti-hero: infamous Kharn the Betrayer!

Snowlord: Very nice - and 64 skulls between them too! Whats that they are standing on?

Paul: That is part of my offering of Lord, the Throne of Skulls!

It boasts an impressive 226 skulls. (amusingly, I had just bought this when I ran into Barks at CanCon - it was hard to keep the inner smile from my face knowing I had this secret weapon for our side duel)

To summarise my offerings Lord, it is 23 x 28mm infantry models, one standard terrain cube, points for the map location and I do believe, My Lord, you said something about a skull bonus?

Haha! This is just brilliant Paul - truly in the spirit of the Snow Lord's Peak Challenge!

My pocketbook had a bit of a twinge when seeing the Greek musician as I think I'm about to fall hard for this Mortal Gods malarkey, and this small chap may just be enough to finally push me over the precipice. 

Those Bestigors (as opposed to the much maligned 'Crappigors') look magnificent in all their choppy, horny, smelly glory. I anticipate many skulls will be harvested from this lot.

Finally, your oh-so-nuanced World Eaters kill team look to be the absolute bomb, erm, absolute axe? absolute Chainsword? Well, you know what I mean. And that Throne of Skulls is completely ridiculous, in a wonderful, gory sort of way. I have a sneaking suspicion that you may have humbugged poor Barks and myself with this whole Skulley McSkullface Challenge. I can only hope he'll be producing something like a Ziggurat of Skulls as a suitable response. :)

Nonetheless, I am a man of my word, so the grand total for this excellent submission, with the noggin-shattering skull bonus, will be a stonking 475 points. Geez! That's one of our larger points bomb on record and blasts you past your personal goal for this year. Methinks that with me at the helm, tossing out points like a drunken sailor, Tamsin can rest a little easier about our overall target...

As to your treasure, Paul, I'm delighted to present you with this plucky pulp adventuress painted by your good mate, the talented AlanD.

Nice and quick this post, 30 more chainrasps for Age of Sigmar.

I needed more of these for reinforcements as my son managed to paint up his stormcast force and they smashed me in the games we've played so far.

Sadly, this lot didn't help me much and they were properly duffed up in the first game we played with them!

Normal ghostly colours and rusty weapons.

I must admit that I'm not entirely sure whether these are the 30 I most recently painted, as having had a game they got mixed in with the 10 I'd already painted, but you can trust me that I've painted 30 more :)

Here is my first batch of Elizabethan Age figures for a new wargames period we are going to have a try with at my local club (SAS Wargames), the figures are from Wargames Foundry and Casting Room Miniatures and as usual from these manufacturers the packs are often a random selection of castings...

... This is fine as we're just getting into the period, likely we'll do Border Rievers and the wider Anglo-Scots conflicts of the time but at least one member wants to bring in the Spanish and their Armada, so who knows where it'll end up.

Figures are based on 20mm disks (pennies) and leaders on 25mm disks (2p pieces)

I didn't think I'd have time to paint these but I'm glad I did. Most of this stuff is resin terrain that I bought from Debris of War although there are a few other items that I managed to buy online. Some of this was pre-painted (badly!) so I gave them a new base coat and started again. I've gone with the simple paint scheme that I've been using on all my Frostgrave terrain with drybrushing in various shades of grey and with homemade winter tufts.

The two metal dungeon covers are also from debris of War and after painting the iron work metal I applied some special rust wash that I bought ages ago. It looks a bit orange in this photo but it's better in real life I promise! 

All these items are what I would class as scatter terrain and can be used with some of the buildings that have already painted or stand-alone items in them in the case of the tombstones and so on.

No idea how they should be scored as far as points are concerned. The whole lot would probably make up about 1 terrain Square but I'm not sure if it's worth 20 points so I'll take whatever today's minion deems worthy for this lot.

Phil Sets Down on Snow Lord's Peak

With the sound of Spanish guitar and castanets in the air, Phil descends upon Snow Lord's Peak.

Managing to look both terrifying and gregarious at the same time, the Snow Lord dances an abbreviated flamenco up the mountain path as the music dies away. 

'Nice one Phil! I love Spanish music.' He clicks his fingers above his head in a final flourish.

'Yeah, it was a very nice accompaniment for our flight in. The Lady Sarah is a little tipsy from the Rioja, so some of the other Challengers may have erratic flights today.'

'No worries, they can sightsee on the way up. That girl does love her Rioja...'

Phil smiles, 'So, I understand that I have to fulfil some sort of challenge in order to get the treasure you have up here, is that right?'

The Snow Lord nods, 'Yes, I'd like a little something in exchange.' He takes a moment to think, 'Say, in past years you usually do a  passel of superheroes during the Challenge, but we've not seen anything from you this time out, so how about a nice Super or two for old times sake?'

'I can certainly manage that. See you in a few days!'

"These units were used primarily to hunt run away slaves but the Spanish used them against Native Indians. The British hired some to fight against the Maroon Revolt in Jamaica. The French also tried using these dogs in Battle in St. Domingue."

These were another part of my Christmas pressie for Mrs R and the kids.

They should be an interesting unit to use on the tabletop!

You can also buy purpose made bases to fit the figures in for ease of movement.

With my new period the Haitian Revolution finally getting some figures painted, I thought it'd be

a good idea to get some jungle terrain made up for Saint Domingue.

How could I refuse Sir Michael plea on Awdry's Atoll???

"For me the challenge, and laterally the bonus rounds was always about having fun, often scratching a creative itch. Weaving a narrative through an idea was always the goal and in order to best compose these frivolities I would often start with a blank CD or DVD. Given the geographical alliteration, Awdry's Atoll, I am proposing as my challenge a Desert Island Disc! I would like to see all manner of creativeness, command stands or even terrain pieces that start life with the humble CD or DVD. (If proving difficult to obtain then any circular basing material of a 120mm diameter will suffice.)"

I've been collecting palm trees and fish tank plants for a few months now. These were glued down onto 2 DVD dics, SAW II and House of Wax if you really want to know? Then based with fine sand with a few stones thrown in for good measure!

So the only real painting done was on the base.

I did add a few grass tufts as well.

Capt Kidd is only in the photos for scale, so no more points for him.

So there we have it 2 DVD disc jungle bases

30 points for the Challenge round and whatever the generous Minion on the day

 would like to give me???

From PeteF: A Legion of Gribbley Horrors (265 points)

Kings of War encourages multibasing - whereby gamers can make dioramas out of their units rather than just ranking up their troops on small square bases. I decided to embrace multibasing for my Nightstalkers army and pay homage to various (mostly horror) films as part of the project.

One of the infantry options for Nightstalkers is Scarecrows. They can be in regiments of 20, hordes of 40 or legions of 60. If the troops "fill the base" it's OK not to have full model count and because of the terrain I made for this unit and the need to create a bit of space around the creepy girl, I only managed to squeeze in 49 scarecrows.

A legion is a bit of a daunting prospect to paint - I used contrast paints for the skin, tendrils and ragged clothes, colour shift Afterburner from Turbo Dork (a putrid gold colour) for the metal weapons and a fair amount of drybrushing to provide highlights and a hint of blood on the skin. Normal layers were used for the smaller details - like bits of string and teeth.  The bluish purple skin colour is similar to what I used for the Butchers and is a mix of Leviadon Blue and Shyish Purple.

The well is scratch build from various bits and Milliput. I put a couple of LEDs in it to light it from the inside and built the lid so that the light will show round the edges - like in the movie poster. Muwahahaha.

The girl is from Studio Miniatures' horror range. She gives me the creeps - which I suppose is the idea. My wife told me she hopes my toys don't come alive when the lights are off! If they do I'm relying on the Napoleonic and WW2 armies to club together to keep these gribblies at bay.

I watched the film almost 20 years ago and it is maybe the last horror movie I saw - although I no longer like the thrill of being terrified for entertainment,  I have enjoyed coming up with horror themed multibases for the Nightstalkers.

spare spectre 

I found one more spectre that I painted earlier in the Challenge so I'm entering him here too. I think I'll use him as a "mindless" levy figure for SAGA, Age of Magic. Was hoping to get this published on Friday 13th... but the pools of blood (Woodland Scenics realistic water) took too long to dry. 50 regular foot and one child for 253 points.

MarticC , JamesM and I were due to be at Hammerhead playing the first for Joshua game . Unfortunately me being on call for work at the last minute due to virus stuff has meant we have missed it ... we will get it back on the road as the developing situation allows

I have to pop out to do a few chores and also have to spin a few day job tasks but I will post stuff through the day along with any other spare Minions..
