Completing my navigation of the Chambers of Challenge it is with some trepidation that we enter the Lair of the Great Beast and encounter the NecroDragon! Clearly this is some sort of zombie dragon but also seems part mechanical, and maybe animated by some tortured human soul (reminds me of Michael Swanwick's Iron Dragon's Daughter which I can highly recommend).
Again this is a Ludus Magnus Studios Black Rose Wars miniature but while a nominal 38mm scale this little fellow is a good 150mm high and the same size in depth and width.
Considering the size he was very easy to paint with an emphasis on dry brush finishes and some work on getting a flame effect for the insides. It was also fun to finally have an eye big enough to apply the full "six step eyes" process too!)
With this I have completed my ascent to the Altar of the Snow Lord and await his benedictions in regard to my final offering.
Not sure how to score this points wise given its size but as a starter 20 for the chamber and 30 as a 40mm vehicle for a total of 50?
A fantastic looking Beast!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray, he cleaned up quite nicely. But he’s not something you’d want to meet!
DeleteNow that's an impressive looking fellow! Well done Simon, that Dragon of yours looks like straight from some feverish nightmare, so spot on for a chaotic/ necro dragon. Points wise I decided on scoring it as 40mm cavalry, as honestly your dragon is big but it's definitely neither a tank nor a car or coach. But for it's sheer size i'll throw in 15 bonus points. So 50 well deserved points it is.
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated! I had fun with it and am glad it worked for the lair and my final chamber

ReplyDeleteAn incredible piece of work! A stunning model and marvelous painting, the eyes are amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks, a fine piece of model design and despite the intricate detail all accessible for painting, I guess it’s easier when they’re bigger 🐉
DeleteWow, that's a 'beautiful' beast. I love the wings and the detail on his head. Well done Simon!
ReplyDeleteThanks Curt, hard to see too much on these low res images but I’m getting more comfortable with detail shading using the purple washes to add contrast, large figures like this really let you work on this sort of thing
DeleteFantastic Beast you have there,.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul!
DeleteExcellent Dragon Simon, very nicely done. I’ll second your recommendation on the book too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter, I just purchased the sequel from a US eBay seller as it didn’t even seem to have a UK edition
DeleteAwesome looking undead dragon, he's splendid!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain, the pictures don’t really pick up the wings that well which have a nice papery matte texture, mainly why I chose not to varnish this one (other than on the base) so as not to affect the finish
DeleteThat's one heck of a paintjob, downright excellent!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sander, it came together very easily, greatest temptation was to overwork it and try too much 😏
DeleteWhat a spectacular centrepiece! Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks Barks, I’ve not looked up it’s stats but I guess he’s a bit of a Boss monster 👹
ReplyDeleteLove it. A spectacular and fearsome beastie!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lee, actually I think he’s quite a cutie ☺️ once you get to know him 🥳
