I have a bit of a habit to paint these old metal minis I have acquired from here and there over the years. Most of them were painted by some one else and then sold. Usually I can't resist to buy these oldies-goldies if the price is right. I'm not collecting these, but I like and I buy them. I might convert to collector in the coming decades, thou...
These four are all from Ral Partha and the three on the right have their counter part painted in the previous Challenge, when I needed female figures. I still need female figures, but I don't have that many unpainted. And these were primed a year ago, so about time to get painted. I tried to keep the painting rather simple and "80s'ish", base colour, subtle wash here and there and light highlight. Makes it rather quick to paint, too. Another very quick part of these is that they are rather small or slim for 28mm minis, certainly not heroic. They don't have too many small details either, so they are very rewarding minis to paint in the AHPC. Plus I like to paint them, I'm not painting them to grab easy points. :)
Knight 000104 and Fighter 11-001 |
The Knight is a bit of mystery to me, he is Ral Partha all right and he has 000104 engraved on his base trim (currently covered in sand), but I haven't found him yet from the Google. Very simple to paint anyway in full armour. The other three are simpler, because they are rather common minis and they are easily identified. The Fighter with two-handed sword comes from the blister with his female counterpart, coded 11-0001 Fighters with Swords. Being lazy I painted his winged helmet in all metal, explaining that the they are not real feathers, but fine craftmanship.
Male Thief 11-005 and 10-510 Elf Fighter |
This next pair is again a simple one, easily identified as Male Thief from blister coded 11-005 Thieves with Short Swords and Elf Fighter from boxed set 10-510 Dungeons and Dragons Basic Heroes Set. Female thief was painted last year and some other characters from Basic Heroes Set have been painted during the years. I went with the classic "Elf in Green" trying to use different greens with some browns and yellows for the elf and I'm quite happy with him, he has uncommon dark brown hair, thou. Thief is mostly in browns with red bandana holding his orange hair (largely known as a mark of a criminal?).
All of them were glued on 3mm thick MDF base, some sand and tufts to make the bases interesting enough, but not too much. I managed to surprise me again with their eyes, all of the eyes are rather good and they were first tries. A thin horizontal line of off white and very thin vertical line of black. More often the eyes are not good, but these are good. I'm 46 and I need to take my glasses off in order to focus on painting. So my eyesight on short distances seems to be good. :)
As for points, this should be a rather simple matter. They are all 28mm minis and there are four of them, so 20 points together. This is a babystep towards my target, but missing the most parts of the first two weeks Challenge, I have now forgotten the target and focus instead on paiting interesting minis to decent level and work on the Theme Challenge rather than trying to keep the production line running up on all cylinders.

Hi Teemu!
I was just about to call my day done and then the Snowlord informs me that there is one more post to attend to.
Good looking old school Ral Partha minis and I especially like the Elfs' vibrant green cloak.
Kudos to "forgetting the target and focus on painting interesting minis" ... I eagerly anticipate what your next post will feature!
20 points for you and Welcome Back to the Challenge!
Ok, now I'm off to eat chocolate cake,

DeleteI like the eighties’ charm of these figures, Teemu. You’ve succeeded very well in creating a fitting paint job! A fine starting a point for the Challenge, and you are right: it should all be about having fun painting!
ReplyDeleteThanks! They were fun to paint and it is nice to get them done and choose something shiny as a next job. :)
DeleteThank you, Sarah! Enjoy your chocolate cake while you can, I guess Snowlors didn't tell you this is a 24h workshift :)
