Thursday's child has Far to go

Morning. We have a nice selection of submisions due today but I have a full day of meetings so there will be a spurt this evening. In the mean time lets have some education

The is the world's national 1st geological map. it was produced by English mining Engineer William Smith. He noticed that rocks in the different mines he worked in Somerset always occurred in the same order down the mine, this is called stratigraphy and is key in understanding the geological history of the area and the planet. He wondered if this was true across the country so between 1799 and 1815 he travelled the country and produced a map of all the rocks in the UK. He published the map the the scientific community didn't give a toss because he wasn't posh and it was another 10 years before his genius was recognised. The modern version is identical, but has different colours and is a bit less creased.

It tough not being posh, but eventually they have to let you in

  2. So, he was ignored because he wasn't born with a silver pick in his hand? Typical!
