From RayR - Haitian Rebels (190 points)

Its back to the Haitian Revolution once again.
These 38 25mm mainly Trent Miniatures we're started last month and painted alongside all the figures I've posted so far and some not yet seen!

3 of the units are made up of 8 figures with a Commander and standard bearer.
The commander figure started out in life as a Wargames Foundry Pirate and in true French Revolutionary style, had his head chopped off and replaced with a suitable bicorned head from Trent.
There isn't much info on what kind of flags the Rebels/Slaves would carry, if at all?
But I wanted them to have some anyway, this one is the Voodoo symbol for Papa Legba,

Papa Legba is a lwain Haitian Vodoo, who serves as the intermediary between the lwa and humanity. He stands at a spiritual crossroads and gives (or denies) permission to speak with the spirits of Guineé, and is believed to speak all human languages. In Haiti, he is the great elocutioner. Legba facilitates communication, speech, and understanding. He is commonly associated with dogs. Papa Legba is invoked at the beginning of every ceremony. Papa Legba has his origins in the historic West African kingdom of Dahomey, located within present-day Benin.

Exactly the same as the unit above, all are Trent minis expect the Commander, who again is a Foundry Pirate with a Trent mini head replacement. The standard is the Voodoo symbol of Baron Samedi.

Baron Samedi (English: Baron Saturday), also written Baron Samdi, Bawon Samedi or Bawon Sanmdi, is one of the loa of Haitain Vodoo. He is a loa of the dead, along with Baron's numerous other incarnations Baron Cimetiere, Baron La Croix and Baron Criminel.
He is the head of the Gede family of loa; his brothers are Azagon Lacroix and Baron Piquant and he is the husband of Maman Brigitte. Together, they are the guardians of the past, of history and, heritage.

The third unit are all Trent miniatures, the commander is from their Vendee range and is infact Jean-Niclas Stofflet a Vendee Rebel Commander. The figures looked so good I didn'r want to chop his head off, so just painted him with brown skin instead. The standard is pretty simple, its a white flag with the word Liberte, on one side.

The last 8 figures, no command or flag for these poor chaps!
Well ok, there is, I based the chap on the right up as a spare commander, but he can be thrown in at any time to make up units of 8.

A close up on the flags, thanks gawd for Microsoft Paint!

Nothing to be seen here.....

A close up on commanders.

And the lot squashed together, from the front..

and the back!

These will be added to the ever growing Haitian Revolution collection, One day I'll get a game with them!?!

If there was every going to be a member of the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge to highlight a "great elocutioner", of course we all knew it would be Ray. Very nice work here, and interesting bits of context and background for a unique gaming setting. Well done!

From BruceR - Companie of the Silver Bayonet, Heros of Glorantha, German AT (95 points)

Here is my final unit for The Silver Bayonet.  Le French.  Again, I really enjoy these miniatures and hope we can play a few games and if not, I will work them into my Sharp Practice games.  I really enjoyed the Heavy Cavalry trooper, the Old Guard (love the pipe), and the Sapper (eye patch), dang I liked them all. Great Stuff.

Here is the whole group, used the females earlier so will not points those figures.  This group of Heros (Glorantha) travel across Europe investigating the supernatural happening on behalf of the Emperor Napoleon.

Officer

Veteran Hunter

Grenadier

Sapper

Heavy Cavalry Trooper

Supernatural Investigator

The three units, Spanish, British, French, came in a prerelease package that included a veteran hunter and a ghoul.  I managed to complete these as well.

Veteran Hunter

Ghoul

On to another era.  I got together last week with a couple of gaming buddies, and we played a WW2 Bolt Action scenario from WSS magazine.  A great scenario depicting the allies (US as we didn't have Canadians) trying to clear the Germans from their festung of the area around Dunkirk.  The allies had a troop of tanks, with the Germans using hidden setup and loaded with panzer Faust.  The Germans were to have a Pak 38, I looked up and there was a Rubicon box teetering on the pile of shame.  So, get the glue, get the airbrush, I couldn't finish the crew so used extra spotters as crew (when you are in retreat everybody is a front liner).

So, after we played, I tried to glue the crew together from Rubicon, and being a mostly lead/metal fan (age) I put them aside and pulled out a bag of Empress Miniatures of a Pak 40 with crew in smocks.  I painted these three plus gun and figure I will only use one gun at a time and can shift the crew.  Or draft spotters again.  I did attempt to follow the guidance of Moiterei from his blog in painting the autumn smocks, happy with mine, but no comparison to his.

Empress Pak 40 on the left and Rubicon Pak 38 on the right.

I did paint the helmets as Herr, figuring they were in support and given smocks to help hide their very helpful AT guns.

11 x 25mm foot = 55 pts
Glorantha = 20 pts
2 25mm AT guns = 20
Total = 95 pts

Very nice work Bruce. Painting any sort of German camouflage from WW2 is a total brain melter, so I think you have some excellent results here. Also quite enjoy the character of those Napoleonic figures - may favourite is the heavy cavalry trooper. Those fellows look scary even when dismounted!

Weather Delays For Wednesday Minion

Northern Ontario in January...may slow posting today...

Good morning all, particularly the members of the fine Wednesday crew (yes, even Ray). Just a slight public service announcement for you, advising of possible posting delays due to a fairly healthy dump of snow that arrived overnight and continues this morning. While "snow days" are lovely in many ways, the need to go out and shovel for good chunks of time does tend to back things up on the posting side.

Not to worry, the dazzling work of the Wednesday folk will be seen - but apologies in advance for any delays.

Cheers!

From PhilH: Loyal to the Republic at Istvaan V (45 Points)

Landing at Istvann V: loyalists or betrayers, with a Spanish Civil War Project on the go? Perfect, I have a couple of dozen People's Militia prepped, based and ready to sling paint onto, so I fished out a handful and got to work.
Along with baffling politics and endless factions and theIR TLAs, the SCW has extrordinary tales of ordinary workers seizing and collectivising their companies and demanding the government distribute arms for them to defend hard-won rights and freedoms from ultraconservative traditionalism erring on fascism. While inexperienced, barely-trained, hurridly organised and lacking much semblence of military discipline, they managed to throw back Franco's battle-hardened Army of Africa and modern allies through their bravery and sheer will to resist.
These join the other motley defenders of the Republic in my collection. They're the start of a platoon of members of the anarcho syndicalist CNT-FAI union, wearing blue workers' overalls with red and blackcaps and neckerchiefs.
They're from the unmatched Empress Miniatures range, I think with a couple of headswaps as I had some duplicate packs. I'm going to need to paint quite a fewmore of these up. Five 28mm figures and the planet bonus is 45 Points, thanks Milady Tamsin. This also represents my first squirrel. Squirrel! Still lagging behind on my side duel with Challenge newcomer JohnE though.

Good to see you return to the Spanish Civil War with these five lovelies! Another 45 points for you, young man!

From PhilH: It All Starts with a Hero at Glorantha (27 Points)

As soon as I saw the Challenge Quandrant, I knew that whatever my original plan, it would enable me to raid the part of my Hobby Stash from a long time ago in a Galaxy far far away...
Where better to start my journey but with a hero: everyone's fresh-faced Jedi wannabe Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. This is one of...four(!) versions of Luke I have in the stash, from a much more recent screen appearance than the original trilogy.
Oh and this opening post also offers some pleasing foreshadowing as I continue my journey aronud the Quandrant, not just of more Star Wars content to come, but some specific minis as I visit a certain planet. No prizes for guessing. I've been struggling to keep up with everyone's posts this year, but it seems a few of the AHPC XII crew are on Star Wars content, so hopefully you won't be fed up of it by the end.
He's a 3D printed miniature by Skullforge Studios, who is one of the most prolofic designers of Galaxy Far Far Away and content for other universes. Star Wars .stls seem to be at the forefront of the 3D printing boom in the hobby, as everyone seeks out their nerdiest niche characters and units from decades of SW content. Having quite a few, recommend Skullforge, though it helps I offload the hard work of printing them to my brother.
He's a late entry in part because Christmas and things, and I needed to source the right 'Luke's Lightsaber green': the fifty shades of feldgrau in my rack were not helpful. I went a bit heavier on the OSL for this one, as the scene the mini is inspired by is particularly dimly lit. Watching too many YouTube painting channels recently, I've also been trying to work on my methods and approach, including thinking of lighting with a zenithal base. Its not all come out in the photos but I'm pleased with the outcome.
I believe it'll be 7 Points for scale creep Star Wars Legion scale, and 20 for a hero at Glorantha. Where next?

Phil had two posts which were in draft state until sometime after midnight in the UK, so I told him I'd post them this morning.

That's a cracking Luke figure, and the OSL looks good. 27 points sees you avoid the Great Cull.

From Guy B: In the nick of time... (Caprica) (185 points)

Crikey! Time flies... and we're almost at the cut-off point for entries... I'd best post something then!

Our local club has been painting up for a 1940s campaign and I am painting up the British Expeditionary Force. I painted two sections of 10 men prior to the challenge and have another few sections to go before I'm finished. So I had my BEF undercoated ready for the challenge and then...

... I became distracted. My fellow challenger Chris K has an idea to speed up the painting of his French and I thought it was such a clever idea that I had to try it too. His entry can be read about here. So I dug out some old Bolt Action French (pre Warlord!) I had sitting in a draw for over a decade. There were originally undercoated black. I added in some of the Atlantic plastics, which fit in pretty well. I gave them all a dry brushing of white and then tried a mix of standard paints and contrast.

I took Chris K's formula for Khaki and added a little more Militarum Green. Mine was about an even mix of Militarum to Darkoath Flesh, or perhaps 5 to 3 in favour of the green, as I toyed with my batches.

The flesh is Speedpaint Crusader Flesh or Instantcolor Phoenix Feather. The leather is Speedpaint Hardened Leather (which comes out very red!).

The backpack was German Camo Beige Brown (VMC 821) with a brown wash. The wood was English Uniform (VMC 921). Helmets were Olive Grey (VMC 888) with a careful green ink wash and a slight highlight.

So I got carried away in batch painting and we have 33 French which I make as 165 points and it has to be Caprica... a noble but doomed effort against the Cylon err.... German invasion.

Hmm, I think I really need to paint some Brits now!!!!

Edit:

Hmmm, it looks as though my closing comments disappeared. I'll have a go at remembering what I wrote - it's quite possible that Guy decided to edit the post at the same time I was "minioning" it and finished after me, so his version is the one which got posted!

In the nick of time indeed! I think we all understand how easy it is to get distracted by, errrm, distractions to the detriment of our intended projects.

These Frenchies look great for speed-painting.

Now that you've made it onto the roster, perhaps you could have a word with your boss...

From ChrisW - 15mm Martian Tripods (Klendathu, Sarah's Yacht, Coruscant) (512 points)

This weeks journey was a long time coming. The Martian cavalry has been worked on, on and off, since the start of this challenge. I had hoped to have them done for last week but ran out of time. I then ignored them for most of the last few days before I finally bit the bullet and got on with it. Even then it was a near run thing. You see, my big problem is finishing tasks. First off I am a major procrastinator, I always find reasons not to work on tasks. Tied in with that is my squirreliness that sees me jump from project to project. If I do not finish a task within a rather short window it will remain unfinished, shelved and ignored.

Since the start of this challenge I have started, and thankfully completed and/or neared completion a number of projects. My posting are a reflection of this chaotic output.

As to the amount of stuff that I have done so far it is quite a shock to me and I doubt that I can maintain this output throughout the challenge, though I am keen to see how far I can get. For all of last year, according to my records, I painted 246 items, and of that a scant 29 items during the winter months. They were a mix of figures, vehicles and scenery. So far thanks to the challenge, counting this weeks posting, I have painted 134 items!

First stop is Klendathu the home of failed invasions, in this case a Martian invasion. So I was able to paint up 3 scout tripods, an assault tripod, and the grand daddy of tripods, the dread Overseer! Now, a note on these models, they are kind of odd looking, at least to me. The forearms remind me of a T Rex, while the legs often look like they are practicing ballet moves!

On the other hand the big Overseer model looks beefy and mean, it stands like it is ready to kick butt. However the model is, how should I say this politely, crap not very good. It is full of mold lines that I did not entirely remove, parts do not fit well together, and detail is scant. In game terms it is a mighty vessel of destruction, and can hold it own against the American landship but the model at best is so so.

I have had this for a few years and just never got around to building it. The biggest surprise to me was that even after all those years by some fluke I managed to not lose any parts! I felt foe certain that I would have misplaced the 6 fingers, but not only had I put them in a baggy for safe keeping, I actually put the bag with the rest of my AQMF figures. I have a real annoying tendency to open up boxes of models and then proceed to misplace, lose parts. No matter how often this happens, I never seem to learn.

Picking up men & bashing 'em against trees

This thing is 9 1/2 inches tall, and the legs are 9 1/2 inches apart. Technically 15/18mm game, but really big! Here it is picking on something it's own size.

From AQMF Martians we travel via Sarah's yacht and the Great Abyssal to my VSF Martians this time on the planet Corsucant  where two  mighty monarchies, whose high upreared and abutting fronts the perilous narrow (ether) ocean parts asunder!

Imagine if you will Queen Victoria on a royal progress visiting her colonial holdings on Mars, confronted by a princess of Mars and her amassed cavalry. Queen Victoria's secret service, along with the grenadier guards must stave off disaster and protect the queen.

The horde of Martian cavalry arrayed against them.

Oh and an armoured car just because...It is a Canadian armoured car from WWI that has somehow found service with the White Russian forces It should have 3 crew but there was a problem, so only the driver is present.

The points this week

  • 300 points for 30 x 28mm Martian cavalry
  • 50 points for 10 x 28mm Grenadier guards
  • 25 points for 5 x 28mm Personalities Queen Victoria, Flashman, Agent Carter, Princess, attendant
  • 32 points for 4 x 15/18mm Tripods
  • 20 for 1 Really big tripod
  • 40 points for 2 Planets visited
  • 20 points for Sarah's yacht (courtesy of Queen Victoria)
  • 20 points for 1 x 28mm Armoured car
  • 5 points for 1 x 28mm Armoured car crew

---------------------------------

512 points in total

So, that was my best output to date, I do not believe I will achieve that again during this challenge, but it might be possible if I turn my attention to the 150 some odd back of beyond cavalry. However I currently feel a pull in another direction(s)...

I feel I may have miscalculated how many points to aim for. To be fair when I reviewed my output last year throughout the winter months and roughly estimating the point value of said output, the total would have been between 425-500 points, so setting a target of 1000 points seemed reasonable. I also factored in my tendency to lose interest in a project, my natural procrastination, and the distraction caused by running RPGs on Roll20.

All this to say that I am not going to sit back and 'celebrate' reaching my goal. Rather I will assume my actual target is 3000 points and see if I can achieve that!

"The chances of anything coming from Mars, are a million to one they said..."

Those tripods look great, Chris, and the cavalry look fab en masse. I was a bit confused about how you were claiming for Lady Sarah's Star Yacht until I realised that the post was very much in draft state -  the "missing" items that were causing my confusion have now been added.
I'm scoring the big tripod as a 28mm vehicle, so that gives you 512 points.
