It's been a week since my last post and all I've got to show for myself is these four little ships worth a whopping 8 points. These are 4 1/2400 scale Italian destroyers and torpedo boats for my WW2 naval project. The original plan here was to model all of the ships that took part in the actions over a 6 month period from destroyers up. We'll see how far I get with this plan but at least I'm getting a good variety of escort vessels for a decent campaign.
Closest to the camera are two GHQ models of the Soldati class Aviere (aviator) and the Poeti class Alfredo Oriani. Both models are sold as Soldati class but the Soldati were only slightly different from the preceding Poeti class. Leave it to the Italians to name one class of ships after poets and then name the lead ship of the next class after the Blackshirts! Both of these ships were heavily engaged in the convoy battles.
Now we have the Spica class torpedo boats (or destroyer escorts) Aretusa and Cigno. These are CinC models. With both navies mining classical mythology for ship names its not surprising that there could be both an Aretusa and HMS Arethusa on table. At least it's not Trafalgar with two Neptunes plus a Neptuno!
So that is 4 hulls at 2 points each for a grand total of 8 points for my overall totals and my Naval Side Duel total. I think I need another 25 hulls or so to catch Adam assuming he stands still for a while. Don't hold your breath on that happening.
Wonderful work on those boats Peter! I'm sure the Supermarina would approve of your latest additions to their fighting strength. Just like with Richards Italian gunners I'll throw in an additional point just because you're showing some amore for Italy in WW2
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Nick. Appreciate the extra point.
DeleteThese look great Peter.
ReplyDeleteThe Regia Marina is doomed but they will look very pretty none the less.
Thanks Paul. Oddly enough it was the Germans who let the Italians down in this case, kind of the reverse of the normal situation. The Regina Marina had the Royal Navy pretty much down for the count by mid 1942, but were hampered by a very small oil ration that limited their operations greatly. It took a tremendous amount of UK resources plus considerable help from the US to pull off the reverse.
DeleteMore Lovely Destoryers!
ReplyDeleteCheers Adam, I am slowly disappearing behind you!
Deleteyou are way ahead in number of hulls :)
DeleteMarvelous looking ships, Peter.
ReplyDeleteNot being a naval gaming aficionado, how big are these? It seems that the age of sail minis are clocking in at 10-15 times the points you're scoring, but I would have imagined that WW2 vessels were larger than wooden sailing ships?
Thanks Stuart. It’s a matter of scale. Adam’s age of sail ships are I think in 1/700 while mine are 1/2400. The two destroyers are on 60mm mdf bases and the Spica’s on 50mm bases. A 350 foot long destroyer is 1.75” at this scale.
DeleteExcellent additions to your collection, Peter! I admire you laser focus on this project.
ReplyDeleteThanks Curt. Laser focus? I must be better at BS than I thought.
DeleteLovely work on more delightful destroyers and as you know I'm all for laser focus!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Cheers Iain. I had to bail on the squirrel🐿 challenge as I wasn’t focused enough to get the minimum number of points together before posting.
DeleteMarvellous little entry, a nice addition to the collection Peter
ReplyDeleteHard to imagine all the work for that amount of points
Cheers
Matt
Thanks Matt.
DeleteThe points were set for a gamer friend of Curt and I who does anything on the most over the top way possible. He negotiated a two point bulk rate and that’s where it’s been pegged. Theses little ships don’t take a huge amount of time once yo7 get the system down and work out what works.
I’ve adjusted my points goal to fit the rewards! I’m in a naval side duel but there I think I’ll likely just be holding Adams feet to the fire until Miles blows us both away.
Very nice, Peter!
ReplyDeleteThanks Barks
DeleteGreat work on these fleets Peter.
ReplyDeleteCheers Greg
DeleteNice one Peter, keep churning them out 👍 I've always said that Naval stuff is under pointed in the Challenge especially when you take into account the basing.
ReplyDeleteRegards KenR
Thanks Ken, I’ve got more on the slipways now. The points are what they are, I’m more worried about getting my stuff out than anything else.
DeleteGreat work, Peter! I always like seeing the Regina Marina on the table. Whenever we've played with them at the local club (.. gosh, local clubs... people meeting.... remember that?!), the Regina has always given a very good account of themselves.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am sure any umpire can have endless fun with garbled radio messages, in frantically radio-ed open code, mistaking the Aretusa from HMS Arethusa on table...
Thanks Sydney. Club gaming, I’ve heard of that...
DeleteI do like a bit of fog of war and confusion....
